Nascido em Nova York em Janeiro de 1950 Michael Lauren toca bateria desde os 8 anos de idade. A sua competência artística atravessa as fronteiras do jazz, blues, funk, rock e world music. Michael estudou na Johns Hopkins University BA, The Peabody Conservatory e Berklee College of Music. Ele é um dos membros fundadores da Escola de bateria de renome mundial em Nova Iorque, Drummers Collective NYC, onde lecionou durante mais de 25 anos.
Michael foi professor de bateria (2003-2020 Ret.) na Escola Superior de Música, Artes e Espetáculo (ESMAE) no Porto, onde também foi diretor do Departamento de Jazz (2005-2010, 2015-2017).
É atualmente professor de bateria na Escola Superior de Música Jam Session (Barcelona, España) e fundador e diretor artístico da International Drum Academy em Lisboa.

Michael também liderou as suas próprias bandas, incluindo Bashier, Magister Ludi, The Michael Lauren All Stars e The Michael Lauren Trio. O primeiro album de The Michael Lauren All Stars, “Once Upon a Time in Portugal”(2016) e o segundo “Old School / Fresh Jazz” (2018) sido altamente premiados e recomendados não só pela critica nacional, bem como a crítica internacional de jazz sendo ambos considerados um dos melhores 10 albúns nacionais de 2016 e 2018 respetivamente.
Trabalhou em produções do Teatro da Broadway e nos estúdios de Nova Iorque, gravando jingles, espectáculos para multinacionais e álbuns. Foi também baterista da editora musical Famous Music.
É autor de sete livros: Welcome To Odd Times – An Approach To Mental and Manual Dexterity For The Drum Set, Comprehending Rhythm, , Rudiments And Variations For Drummers, The Encyclopedia of Double Bass Drumming, The Book Of Silence, Rhythmic Fundamentals e Understanding Rhythm – A Guide To Reading Music.
Professor e especialista reconhecido internacionalmente, escreveu artigos para a “Modern Drummer Magazine”, para a “Percussive Notes”, a revista da Percussive Arts Society, e para a “Score Magazine”, uma subdivisão da série de televisão Rock School da PBS.

New Yorker Michael Lauren (b.1950) began playing the drums at the
age of eight. His artistry fuses the boundaries of jazz, blues, funk,
rock, and world music.
Michael attended The Johns Hopkins University,
The Peabody Conservatory and Berklee College of Music. He is a
founding member of the world renowned Drummers Collective NYC,
where he taught for over twenty-five years. Michael was the
Professor of Drum Set Studies (2003-2020 Ret.) and head of the Jazz
Department (2005-2010 & 2015-2017) at the Escola Superior de
Música e Artes do Espectáculo (ESMAE) in Porto, Portugal.
He is currently Professor of Drum Set Studies at Escuela Superior de
Música Jam Session Barcelona, España and is the founder / artistic
director of The International Drum Academy Lisboa, Portugal.

Both of The Michael Lauren All Stars’ albums, “Once Upon A Time
In Portugal” and “Old School / Fresh Jazz”, were not only highly
praised by both Portuguese and International jazz critics, but were
chosen as one of the 10 best national albums (Portugal) of 2016 and
2018 respectively. Michael has worked in Broadway theatre
productions, in the studios of New York recording albums, jingles,
industrials and was a staff drummer for the music publishing company
Famous Music.
Michael is the author of seven books: Welcome To Odd Times – An
Approach To Mental and Manual Dexterity For The Drum Set, The
Book of Silence, Comprehending Rhythm, Rudiments And Variations
For Drummers, Rhythmic Fundamentals, Compreender Ritmo and
Understanding Rhythm – A Guide To Reading Music. An internationally
recognized educator and clinician, Michael has written articles for
Modern Drummer Magazine, The Percussive Arts Society’s magazine
Percussive Notes and Score Magazine a subdivision of the PBS
television series “Rock School”.
